I was going to miss a trip about 15 years ago. I pulled out my credit card and bought a ticket. Over 900 dollars for a 90 minute flight.
900 dollars one time, divided by 20 years of commuting, is slightly above zilch. My bank account doesn't remember that hole in it, nor do I.

Don't make a habit of it ? I would laugh out loud as I hung up the phone on him/her.

15 years ago there wasn't a commuter policy codified in the FOM and CBA. Follow the FOM and CBA policy and there's no problem other than that sucking sound in your paycheck for missing a trip.
Buying a ticket may be better than losing the entire value of a pairing. I just ran into that trying to commute on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
