The only place I can't stand when guys hand fly is in NYC....all that twisting of knobs and pushing buttons on the FMS and working the radios while the dude just sits there and chills giving me orders is one hell of a work load especially if its crazy busy like it normally is. I always get the AP on departure at 600 FT in NYC just to make the workload much less for the NON FLY. That is just me. Some people are clueless as to why I do that.
Pilot flying can turn his own knobs if you're too busy. But leaving say LGA on Whitestone, it's probably easier to use the AP. Agreed.
