I was a "Guard" baby, did some AD, was a guardsman, a reservist, an ART, just for background. If you really want to go to UPT, are blessed with meeting the medical standards, get a degree and start early enough before the limit age--you will go to UPT. I sent perhaps a dozen to UPT as a Ops O and commander, everyone really wanted it. The ones that didn't got waylaid by other glittering objects like wives, other careers, money, etc. it will take several years to get the whole process done, MOST OF THE TIME.

I sent two standouts back in the post-Desert Storm drawdown in a matter of weeks. One was direct commissioned (not possible now) and the other was a commissioned ROTC grad who wasn't given a UPT slot in the drawdown.
