Autopilot can be Defer you dont want to gain that experience when you loose the AP Trust me on that one.
My second day of IOE we got a plane with a deferred autopilot. Captain thought he'd be a wise guy and let me fly every leg that day. (We kept the plane all day...funny how the time something is broken on a plane is when you keep it.)
