If the HUDS are displaying critical approach, corridor, and clearance data that's one thing. I was basing my statement off of, as you said, fighter style info that's generally presented, where mine is keeping me up to date either under night vision with FLIR, or basic A/C and wpns info.
I disagree that's it's a waste, a HUDs utility goes beyond managing weapons systems. I've flown both with and without and it's not that it can't be done well without it, but it does provide the information in an easier format. And it can definitely make for better landings, the Flight Path Marker really simplifies things. Your comment about FLIR makes me think you fly helos. Does your HUD display in your helmet, or is there also one mounted above the glareshield?
Either way, you get used to whatever you're flying but I would always prefer a HUD.
