I used to bid down to reserve relatively often over a round 2 line for particular days off and flexibility. Of course these days by the time you figure it out you'll have a line.
Pilots are typically paid a minimum day guarantee (it's a little more complicated at PSA because of the carve outs for min day) so if you fly at all on a day you get paid min day or what you fly whichever is greater. On reserve you don't get that "privilege".

That does lead to my "problem" though - I'll definitely commute. It's a PSA draw, having multiple direct flights available from my small market local airport. A necessary evil at this point; at least for short term. Now, if only someone would open a hub near Destin I could live in base...
