I understand your question now. Sorry if I sounded like I was ranting. The CL-65 (ICAO: CRJ9) is the type. CL-600-2D24 is the model designation, subtle difference.

I personally, as well as others, have always defaulted to the ICAO "Type Designator." In that case, Mesaba has SF34, CRJ2 and CRJ9 types.

You can look them up for the vast majority of aircraft at: www.icao.int

The FAA version can be found in Order 7110.65 Appendix A.
