Scenario: 5 pilots in line at a gate for the jumpseat. The last guy walks over to the adjacent gate, which has no line, and lists for jumpseat there. That pilot now has priority. Yes, not a cool move, but whats the difference?
In the situation you mention above it's bad etiquette. I would have words with the person involved. In your specific situation there is nothing wrong with getting listed before that gate is opened for the flight. I often list at the ticket counter or quarterpoints hours before a flight.
