I guess I should re-phrase my question. I understand it's first come, first serve. But is going to another gate/help desk hours before departure time an accepted practice?

Scenario: 5 pilots in line at a gate for the jumpseat. The last guy walks over to the adjacent gate, which has no line, and lists for jumpseat there. That pilot now has priority. Yes, not a cool move, but whats the difference?
