Right now you don't pay an upcharge if you get upgraded, so I don't expect that they intend to do it under the new system either.

The imputed income thing could actually be a win if it goes the way they are explaining it. You take the current yield / buddy fare and it gets added to your paystub as income instead of paying 100% of it out of pocket. So depending on your tax rate that year, you'll realistically only pay ~33% of what you did before.
