Always go and clear your sick calls. But as a pilot that just got off probation, during your first year, DO NOT CALL IN SICK. That **** will *********** haunt you. If you can walk and read the instruments then go in. The company doesn't give a damn.
If you're on reserve, just hope they don't call. I was proactive and even though I was the most senior FO I called to let them know I was sick. Rather do that, than be the a**hole who would be their last resort and tell them nope. But noooooooo. Haven't heard the end of it. And don't count on the commuter policy. Better just list yourself on 6 flights and hope for the best
Learn to be flexible. And by that I mean practice touching your toes cause the company is gonna want you in the position for a loooong time.
