However, if it was a pre-planned event ie vacation, wedding, ect. then they'll be probably be less likely to work with you on that. "You knew you had an event but elected to start training anyway". They'll say, "That's not their problem, you should have planned better". As far as maternity leave, you'll have to talk to the training scheduler. She will be able to steer you straight, better than recruiting can.
If you do get unscheduled time off during training, BE VERY CAREFUL! You're still on company time, getting company benefits, and restricted to company policies. What that means is, you get 24/7 per-diem while in training. If you take unscheduled time off, that per-diem is supposed to stop. But pay-comp doesn't always know the situation, and will continue to pay it. Also, if your benefits have kicked in, and you're not in training for a specific amount of time, instead of getting a paycheck, you may very well end up owing the company money back. If you use company passes to travel while taking unscheduled time off, you'll have to have permission to make the company travel.
In general you are required to get permission or your travel benefits get lost all together during leaves of absences. However anything having to do with time off for having a baby doesn't effect your travel benefits.
