Looking at the history of commercial aviation this advice is not infallible but it is solid advice in more cases than not.
Sometimes you don't even know then. My Dad was retired from UAL when they dumped his pension to the PBGC. Some senior Whale guys went from $100K plus to PBGC max of $44K. Talk about sucking.
