My take is this:
1.) I'm sitting here listening to my dad's "death rattle." The earliest memory of my entire life is my dad and that signature white cover the Pan Am pilots wore! Ladies and gentlemen, we're not taking any of this with us when we're gone! But we're leaving behind memories for other people!
2.) I'm military, did the minimum time I had to do on active duty and was picked up by SWA in 2000, and still serve, now in a non flying role in the reserves.
3.) I'm pushing 50 years old, no wife, no ex, no kids. That used to be a badge of honor I wore. Now, watching this old man die, all I can think of is he is leaving me, my brothers and sisters, and a plethora of grand kids behind. People who will always remember him as bigger than life!
My point? TAKE YOUR 300K ish money and run if your max pay Capt ladies and gents! You can get ridiculous and probably pick up another $175k if your clever. But you and only you know if it's truly worth it.
*** It's always been a source of pride, and produced many a chuckle with me, that I can be flying 73's and making more than any international Captain I know. But I'll guarantee you one thing, I flew 2, probably 3 times as many actual hours than them. Who is getting the better deal? That's a debate that can not be won.
