I was stationed with an extremely lucky guy that bounced an F-4 off of a hill (literally hit the ground) during a maverick mission. He flew it back to Nellis and landed. So...when guys used to brief that the pk of the ground was 1.0, I used to smile and say "no, it's not 1.0, 0.99999999999 maybe, but not 1.0." How many fighters can survive ground contact and RTB. What a tough old bird. Kind of like the old Timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
A fine squadron commander lost his drone squadron a few years back at Tyndall when he "skipped" off the water. Can't publish the accident report info but this was an honest mistake. Good news is he and jet both landed safely.
