Check in the day prior, or walk up to the gate and list for a non-rev flight, it’s all the same. I personally try to do it myself just so the gate agent doesn’t have to “waste” their time doing something I could have done, but about once or twice a year, I find the need to do so. At any rate, you are never behind the 30 who checked in ahead of you, this isn’t AA, it’s DL. Goes on priority code, then hire date (seniority). You can walk up to the gate, have the agent list you, and get on ahead of the 15 SKW, GJ, and XJT pilots who checked in last week.
The only issue you should have on DL is listing for the JS. If you get to the gate 2 minutes after the other JS applicant, he/she wins. Unless it’s a DL pilot, then you lose even if you sign up before they do. Them’s the rules.

It's really frustrating to check-in for the flight home with one standby and a few airport standby, then fly all day, get to the gate ready to go home and discover you are no longer on standby and 30 folks "checked-in" in front of you...
I'm not complaining about the rules, I'm not happy about the rules being implemented incorrectly or not followed. Yes, I'm watching it closely and I'll be submitting documentation. The sad part is management will consider it an isolated incident while I believe it is more systemic.
Of course, airlines can make you paranoid, so, anybody else noticing this?
