We had a pilot get fired for calling in sick about 6 months ago. Don't know the status on that (he was a jerk, so I don't really mind- couldn't stand flying with the guy- but that is a slippery slope too). Heard he went to a job fair while he was sick and lied about it to the CP on the phone when called to question.
I have heard of many pilots getting hauled in for calling fatigue... one a close friend of mine.
Being a Jerk coulda been part of it, that probably didn't help him. If you pass benefits that is probably stated somewhere in a company manual that you can't use them if you call off of duty. If he jumpseated and they found out he could be in trouble, If your sick and can not fly, how can you be an "additional crew member" on another flight (kind of a catch 22).
