3. Do you need the money? Probably but you need your career more.

If you are talking about Mesa Air Group then ANYONE can make more money as a bartender somewhere. Why anyone takes a job at that miserable outfit I will never understand.

Agreed the rules suck, but nothing justifies both crew members falling asleep.

You seem to think that they fell asleep on purpose. I guess that you have the ability to keep yourself awake just because the FAR's say you must.

Of course it's not ok that they fell asleep, but I guarantee you that they didn't do so on purpose. Instead of jumping on them, why not dig deeper and try to understand why a professional crew falls asleep.

Dude, you don't understand what it's like. With the same reasoning the Holocaust was the fault of the Jews because they didn't stand up to the Nazis... totally different leagues here, but can you see what I am getting at? When ya get beaten down time and time again, eventually you take the path of least resistance: ie. fly sick, tired etc. That is how it has been like at MAG.

edit:
wow... I am gonna get taken to the mat with this one I am sure...

We had a pilot get fired for calling in sick about 6 months ago. Don't know the status on that (he was a jerk, so I don't really mind- couldn't stand flying with the guy- but that is a slippery slope too). Heard he went to a job fair while he was sick and lied about it to the CP on the phone when called to question.

I have heard of many pilots getting hauled in for calling fatigue... one a close friend of mine.

Had one of our FO's back east call in sick at an out station. He ultimately ended up with damaged kidneys because it was an E coli type infection. After calling in sick he was able to stay upright long enough to get home to see his own doctor and ultimately got fired for jumping on a plane home after calling in sick.

Being a Jerk coulda been part of it, that probably didn't help him. If you pass benefits that is probably stated somewhere in a company manual that you can't use them if you call off of duty. If he jumpseated and they found out he could be in trouble, If your sick and can not fly, how can you be an "additional crew member" on another flight (kind of a catch 22).

Yeah, I don't think it was the sick thing so much as the integrity thing. Its truly amazing what you can get away with if you have the backbone to fess up right away. I've seen guys crash planes and fess up and still get another shot at flying, and seen guys in a near miss lie about it and lose their wings.
