Lots of F/As have been hired from other departments.

I recently had a Skywest jumpseater and he spent 12+ years as a ramp worker as a Southwest employee. He's currently upgrading to captain at Skywest and hopes to get hired back to be a pilot at Southwest. Based on his attitude and credentials I'd be surprised if he isn't back at Southwest flying the airplane sooner rather than later. So yeah, it happens.
