The promissory note is in the amount of $30,000. This amount was calculated as the investment we spend on new hires in training. (flight time, hotel, payroll, training material…)

In the case of “terminated with cause” as the note reads, you would NOT be expected to pay as WE are the ones who terminated the employment. Causes for termination include but are not limited to training failures, multiple or extreme disciplinary actions, or loss of medical. So in the case of wash outs that you mentioned, which is much lower than 50%, you are not expected to repay.

We would ask you to repay this investment if WE did not have a reason to terminate the employment and you chose to leave prior to the one year commitment. As its worded in the note, we are “without cause” to terminate employment. Obviously there are extreme circumstances for each side but we really aren’t looking for ways to make anyone pay.

As to your concern about upgrading; As an operation that can technically fly single pilot, the only reason Cape Air hires first officers is to get low time pilots the knowledge and experience required to fly as a captain. Therefore, once you reach the ATP minimums, you will be upgraded to captain without delay.
