If you get a seat in the cabin on ANY OTHER AIRLINE (unless using a ZED), then you need to check-in with the captain.
I always check in, regardless of whether it is required. I even try to check in when I’m deadheading. It just seems courteous. I also take a moment to introduce myself to the FAs. My courtesy always appears appreciated, and CAs often tell me to let them know if I can’t find a spot for my bag, et cetera.
