I always check in, regardless of whether it is required. I even try to check in when I’m deadheading. It just seems courteous. I also take a moment to introduce myself to the FAs. My courtesy always appears appreciated, and CAs often tell me to let them know if I can’t find a spot for my bag, et cetera.
I don't fully expect everyone to do this, but I do it as well, as a good practice. It's a great courtesy, and it gives the crew a heads up that you're there, in case of some kind of abnormality or emergency.
