Your not seat locked unless you switch planes, so if he was awarded a 200 slot and moves to the 900, the seat lock would apply to the 900. Bigger issue is getting differences training on the 900 right now.
This changed with LOA 91. There is now an 18 month new hire seat lock. Many of the people still waiting for differences are from 17-05 before the LOA went into effect.like NotMe said, you better have a “good” ssn.

New Hire First Officer Freeze
An 18 month freeze, commencing on the pilot’s date of hire, will apply to new hire pilots. The freeze would prevent a First Officer from being awarded another Category (i.e. 200 FO to 900 FO or the reverse), but will not delay or prevent a First Officer from being awarded a CA position. There is also an exception for a new domicile.
The freeze will take effect January 1, 2018 and will apply to all First Officers with less than 18 months from their date of hire. Awards published prior to January 1, 2018 will not be affected.”
