In my opinion, it has very much to do with one particular instructor who was told to stop pulling this crap. I know of a very senior captain, a lifer, who walked out on this instructor. This is normally a calm, level-headed captain that I'm talking about who couldn't take this guy's crap any longer. They will continue to lose good pilots if they don't do something about this guy!
I highly doubt they are failing people that don't deserve to be failed. Just show up ready like you're supposed to do at this job and everything will be fine. Even if the instructor is harder than others.
