Well, it is unfortunate that this is the first you heard of this. This article barely scratches the surface on what happened with the CA from the fume event, until his death.
This is the event which sparked the fume event changes in the industry. The First Officer, Eric Tellmann, took the experiences of that event and substantially changed the way Spirit deals with fume events, as well as the industry, as he now works with ALPA and APA to help educate pilots.
Fume events have been around for a long time, often ignored and unreported. Its nice to see airlines finally take notice of the effects of fume events and its all comes back to this flight, it sparked the change.
