Its the other way around....DL is much larger in the east and NWA is larger in the midwest and west. NWA is huge to Asia, where DL lacks and DL is huge to Europe and South/Latin America where NWA is lacking. CVG and MEM would be closed as hubs and downsized significantly in favor of DTW and ATL I'd be willing to bet. And yes, the type rating for an MD-88 and MD-90 for that matter does say DC-9. But they are still somewhat different from the original DC-9 that NWA still flies.
Of all the mergers being thrown around among the legacies I believe this one to be a better fit than DL/UA...just my $0.02
