Santa Cruz is about 1:00-1:30 drive. If there is traffic (not the middle of the night), take the coastal highway. As relaxing and enjoyable of a drive as there is, until the commute traffic in Half Moon Bay which is tolerable.
Whatever you do, include in your analysis the traffic patterns both to and from work.
