I’d say that you’re both correct. The regional model is fee-for-departure, but the bigger planes could result in fewer segments. If you fly a 50-seater to BTR 4 times a day, you could replace that with a 70-seater and do it 3 times a day.
And invite the competition. The hub and spoke model requires lots of flights to out stations to work. If what you are suggesting was feasible why not do one flight a day a 200 seater?
