Trying to understand what "special" means, apostrophes and all.

Just flew a trip with a reserve captain, who got one of these "special" offers of a class date at Alaska, outside of pathways...

This guy is very solid, O-5, current aircraft commander in the guard, C-130, he's got B-737 type (GI - Bill) for SWA, who said TBNT 12 years ago and A-320 type from one of those supplemental outfits he took a chance on, but who filed BK.

I could be wrong, but just assuming that "special" has some measure of negative connotation, despite the fact that this individual is eminently more qualified than many in the pathways program, for Alaska's purposes, my "Mother Bear, protect my Captain" instinct kicks in.

BTW, this individual is half my age, but still a pleasure to fly with.
