Do you think they should allow that risk? It's called risk mitigation. They don't want you to do anything outside of work that will cost them. Hence appendix S.
This can happen doing any kind of recreational flying. So that is not a valid reason.

Strictly my opinion, but if you can't get by on a FedEx pilots salary alone, then you have severely done it wrong. If you want a side hustle, there are much more profitable ways to go about it that don't require flying.
Maybe they can get by. Maybe they just want to because America?
