My first time jump-seating was on SWA and I was told by the gate agent to take a seat in the back. I had been told to check in when jumpseating but my 23 year old brain figured “well I’m not jumpseating so no need to bother them.” They called me up to the cockpit after everyone had boarded and proceeded to give me a run down on proper jumpseat etiquette. They were nice about it but yeah, always check in.


Certainly good advise- but I’m not sure “check in” is the right way to look at it.

Regardless of what seat you’ve been assigned, or what a gate agent has said- it’s your RESPONSIBILITY as a “jumpseater” to ASK for that ride.
