Jumpseating - check in. Any other circumstance - say hi if you bump into the pilots but don't go out of your way. That's how I like it as the operating crew. I personally prefer having as few people parading through the flight deck as possible. Maybe I'm antisocial.

Tend to agree but some new guys not from 121 backgrounds don’t know that you can have a seat in the back and still be technically jumpseating. If unsure just check in and say you got a seat in the back but don’t know if you were cleared as a nonrev or a jumoseater and ask for the ride.

I've done this before because I did not want to interrupt the crew, only it was on a napkin. The captain sent a note back saying thanks for checking in. It was cute. We shared a little moment. The flight attendant thought it was gay. Who knows. Maybe it was a little....

Very true. In my first couple of months of 121 commuting I thought I was cleared as a nonrev and boarded without greeting the crew. I got lectured after the flight on the jetway in front of all the passengers waiting for their gate checked bags about always asking for the ride when you're on the D6 list. After that I always ask for the ride if I started the process in jumpseat mode regardless of what the gate agent did.
