In uniform, out of uniform, pilot, FA, online, offline, DH, commuter, standby, it doesn't really matter, always check in. Jumpseating and pass riding are privileges, not entitlements. Show gratitude, be humble, and offer assistance as an additional crew resource if needed.

Disagree 100%. Do not check in with flight deck while pass riding or dead heading.

Because why? You don't feel it's important the crew up front knows they have an additional resource in the back?

It’s an unnecessary distraction and as a matter of fact it’s written in some FOMs specifically not to check in. Actually I apologize I only disagreed with 80% of what you said.

I agree on pass riding, I meant to say standby, as in commuting.

I don't think it's distracting in the least, there are plenty of breaks in the preflight action to introduce oneself.

You could do it middle school style and write a note on a piece of paper and give it to the lead to give it to the captain.

I love all the fear of “distraction”. 90% of the boarding process is idle chat and complaining about the the company

And the FA’s complaining that the flight is going to be an 1:45 instead of 1:35.

If you’ve got a seat in the back, don’t interrupt me! I’m busy posting/reading APC.
