ALPA just spelled out proper jumpseat etiquette in their last magazine. There’s no excuse to not ask permission! I become the a$$h@le that says... “are you asking me permission to ride the jumpseat?” It’s funny to see the look on their faces!

Hell, when I’m riding space positive on another carrier in uniform I stop up to say hello and let them know I’m space positive and not some jack wagon that got a seat in back while jumpseating and didn’t bother to ask. Last AA crew was very thankful I let them know.

Different airline but honestly, as long as they have a seat in the back I don’t really care as long as the FAs know who they are for potential help/ABP situations.

Our FOM supports that viewpoint:

Just a guess- but I imagine this policy is for your company pilots- not OAL Jumpseaters...
If not, basically goes against ALPA policy, which seems unlikely.

Personally I always go to the FD and ask for permission even when given a seat in the back. 50% of the time though I get the "oh you already have a seat in the back, why you here?" Even Spirit, last time LAX-DTW I got a seat in the back but still stopped up front to request permission. Same thing.

Never have had a crew look at me funny for requesting a ride after the gate agent has given me a seat. Never has a crew looked at me cross eyed with a “why are you here?”

Every single time it has been “ok, welcome aboard”

So I’m not really buying your 50% claim.

It's under the jumpseat policy, it's for everyone. It does kinda go against the ALPA guidance, but when it came out the point they tried to drive was there was a lot of congestion and distractions in the last ~ 15 minutes prior to departure and it was one method they tried to cut down on it. So regardless of FAs or pilots, as long as they had seats in the back, then they are good to go without having to officially check with the pilots.

The other aspect is how you are "processed" in the system. Like on Delta, I routinely get a jumpseat access cockpit pass on the boarding pass, with a seat assignment written by pen. Somewhere in their system, it probably shows I'm a jumpseater. Whereas at AS, if you're assigned a seat in the back then I won't know through my system that you are a jumpseater. Only when you are officially assigned the jumpseat (1W or 2W) that I officially see it in our iPad system and know that a jumpseater is coming my way.

I don't jumpseat much but when I do, I'm just saying what I experienced. Only one guy was as direct as that, and said you already have a seat in the back, why you here? The other cases, they aren't rude or giving funny looks, it's a oh you already have a seat in the back, you don't need to stop here kinda thing. Different wording of it.

I always stop by to ask anyway. And I always appreciate when guys stop by to ask as well.

Haha, exactly! Never been given the “why are you here look!” Always given the “thanks for stopping by” from the crew. Hmmmmm sounds suspect from shyguy???

Wow. Funny responses. Trust me I was grateful for the ride. I was actually assigned one of the small seats on a wide open flight. One of the FA said I should move seats once hoarding was complete. Oh btw of course I checked in w the pilots. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. I’m asking for a ride. As for the critique on the seats. I stand by them. You have 3 sections of different seats. Kind of comical. The clients obviously like it. They call SWA the greyhound of airlines well I guess Spirit is the city bus. I guess I’m used to SWA seats where a someone tall is even comfortable. I’m not trying to hate but just voice a view of my experience. I get the defenders. I haven’t met a spirit pilot I haven’t liked. Granted it has only been the 2 I asked a right from so it’s 100% cool pilots in my book.

It’s been awhile. I am a commuter. I only commute on SWA. Was just going a different way this time.
