This is not the attitude of a trusted crew member. They don't want you to protect yourselves. If you do protect yourself, you’re a pig in their eyes. If you don’t make efforts to protect yourself, you still get to be a pig in their eyes AND you will always be at the mercy of whatever they feel is appropriate, not what you knew to be appropriate. Like LNL76 stated at various times in this thread, there is no mercy, no sympathy for either kind of man. All that matters is power. When you remove yourself from any non-public interaction with them, they lose power. They hate that.
Give them no opportunity.
