From the captains that I fly with who are conducting interviews, the majority of those who don’t make it are because of attitude or failing the Hogan. It’s not a question of qualifications. Those who understand that these programs do nothing but enhance your chances of getting an interview, not preferential hiring, typically do well. They show up prepared, humble, and with the attitude that they are just another off the street guy looking for a better job. Those who don’t get application/resume reviews or interview prep, or treat the process as a formality because they think that they already fly for United typically don’t get the job. There has never been a guarantee and most likely won’t be. If someone fails one interview at a legacy they may get to try again eventually, fail twice and scratch them off the list of potential employers. There are plenty of pilots at top paying airlines who were shot down by another. Just because United says no, doesn’t mean that another good company will. I wanted American because of the DFW base, but that’s not the way that it worked out.
