I tend to agree, but the argument would be that many or most of the "best" schools (ie ivy league, Stanford, etc.) are private, and this need to be available to the disadvantaged.

That's the argument, but personally IMO if you want access to private anything, go earn the money, don't expect the taxpayers to cover that. There are plenty of very good public schools, although some of them are darn pricey too.
