When this was implemented, I spoke directly to the cpo and the reps and they stated it was for flexibility of the FA crews. They were landing in places and needed to reroute them and were unable to due to drinking on dead heads. Both stated that their assumption on why it was implemented on us is because the FAs would not be pleased if we were still allowed to drink on dead heads. Never once heard it was because of a dead head pilot abuser of the drinking policy.
I know it’s difficult to believe (sarcasm) but there have been pilots who drank way too much on DH’s.
