The problem is most of these young and feeble newbies froth at the signing bonus without fully realizing how bad of a deal it really is. All the regionals are preying on these 20/21-year-old Cessna CFI's that have loads of debt racked up, need/want a cash infusion now just to find out later that the bonus really doesn't go that far. By the time they receive the whole amount over the current 3 year amortization schedule, they've lost a lot more potential pay because the scales are held down low to compensate for it. With better pay over those 3 years, more potential income is generated, productivity would be increased, and I'd bet the farm that YX would have stacks of new recruits a la how 9E did when they blew the doors off payscales a few years back. But for a lot of these guys that have never made a significant financial decision on their own to this point in their life, the overall value of better base pay is often lost over the enticing big number carrot held out in front of them at the onset. I wish that sort of disclaimer was posted on the front page of every regional pilot union's welcome packet.

Oh and if you decide to leave the company within those 3 years, they will be coming after their bonus. Take note, recruits.
