New Hires smooth the pipelines out since the company gets to place them with relatively short notice.
It’s also like trying to fill a bucket with holes in it, and NYC is that bucket. The natural tendency for pilots to bid their way out of commuting (traditionally to NYC), and there are so many openings available, the company has of late (ATLM88B excepted), generally only offered NYC to new hires in order to keep it staffed and allow conversions by more senior pilots to other bases. By the time the company gets anywhere near to filling the NYC categories, we hold another AE, allowing many of those pilots to bid to other places, thereby sustaining the demand for new bodies to New York.
