Perhaps so, but the two are closely related. How many of those 2000 would have made the same decision if instead of looking at say 1-7 years left were looking at 6-12 Years left?
As far as the career goes - agree 100%. Never enjoyed "going to work" but always enjoyed "being at work." If that makes any sense.

I'm not gonna get in the middle of this but to offer this one point. The guys who left early were ( for the most part) taking a 50% lump sum of 1 million $$$$. So 1M in hand and another 5k month??. I would have asked myself, " how long will it take me to save 1M $$ at current and/or projected pay rates?". (TVM and all that yada, yada, yada) At the time I was < 50 , was a75/76 capt grossing 170k per year, The answer would have definitely factored into my decision.
Glad I was unable to have a choice.
