Someone could be seniority 12,000, commuting from California to reserve as NYC717B for a year. 12,001 through 12,500 could all end up getting that same pay, for zero obligation to the company, for perhaps 9 months. There's a furlough risk for all of them, but the pilots actually doing work for their paycheck have reason to scratch their head, if not more.
Any furlough number isn't set in stone. If someone wants to trade places with the junior pilot because that situation is so much better, then maybe we can create an LoA where you actually trade seniority numbers with them. Oh, no one would do that? Exactly.
