Japan has about 1 death per 100,000 to our 63. Germany 11 deaths to our 63 per 100,000. Overall population health matters but age is the most predictive morbidity factor. I would note that both Germany and Japan have significantly older populations than the U.S. .
The US has, and has had one of the highest mask wearing rates in the world, more than double most of Europe. The US did so poorly with the virus because our healthcare system is massively corrupt.
