Codeshares are basically two companies sharing in some way the revenue from a passengers purchase of a singular ticket in order into increase efficiency in each other’s business. United isn’t paying Alaska to fly an entire flight with a codeshare, but they are paying PSA to.
Not to detail too much, but codeshares don’t really share revenue. If it is a revenue sharing operation, it is a joint venture. More accurately, it allows pax to book via their carrier of choice and have more frequency/destination options while remaining with their carrier of choice, and on the same itinerary, and often allows reciprocal frequent flyer earning and burning privileges.
