The Founding Fathers had a firm grasp of mob rule. And that's exactly where a pure Democracy leads. Hence, the reason for a Representative Republic (i, e. the Constitution). The reality is that we already have an entrenched system where the popular vote decides elections anyways through counties for each state. Big blue counties such as New York, Queens, Bronx, Nassau in New York City pretty much decides the fate of the entire state (Blue and extremely liberal). Also, this is where nefarious statecraft comes into play such as gerrymandering. Like vote counting (not who voted), those who get to decide where district lines are drawn decides the election outcome.

Though, few will admit it after the fact-the Imperfect Instrument-Trump as Steve Bannon calls him; will be much more appreciated only after their 401Ks have tanked and WS/WS bankers have regained all their China ponzi schemes at the expense of everybody not in the top 10% of the country. A prospective Biden Presidency at best will be Obama 3.0. At worst it will be Hillary 1.0.
