Quote: The difference is furloughs cost tens of thousands of dollars each between furlough pay, advanced vacation, relocation and if necessary, retraining.

ExTO is a is a minor inconvenience compared to furloughs, and that is something they’re not willing to do. They certainly don’t want to do furloughs. Exactly right, it’s just a money grab to try to impress shareholders.

Don't forget displacements (with associated relocation or hotel costs), downgrade training etc...

On EXTO pilots are just plucked out of their bases, but their positions remain there without the cascade of displacements.

A furlough would necessitate a displacement/reduction bid and all of the messiness that goes with it!

Not to mention the immense cost and time associated with eventually bringing everyone back at the glacial pace of about 100 pilots per month, hotels, new background checks, AND paid relocation if they're not recalled into the domicile they're furloughed from.
