A while back NWA created this company to provide a common entity for the Purchasing/Supply Chain, Finance, Legal and IT departments to support both carriers. Employees that worked in Purchasing for Mesaba, for example, now "work" for MCH.
Obviously there is an economy of scale by having these departments work both wholly owned regional partners with a high degree of commonality.
On one of my commuting flight to MSP couple of months ago, I sat next to a NWA management type who told me that NWA has created a Mesaba Compass Holding Corporation which will wind up owning and managing all aspects of airline operation of Mesaba and Compass.
