They become common if the company can’t cover the trips. I worked XMas once via a jetway assignment. There was once a time when pilots changed out of uniform and gave their flight kits to another pilot to sneak off the aircraft it was so bad.
I've heard the famous legend of the great escape via catering truck a few times. It may be embellished or have no truth at all but it's lore at this point. Of course this would never work today because catering shows up at D15.
