Why would you ever fly some of the garbage trips they build? For me those go in the bin whenever they can and I WS trips to get me to the trigger. Without a doubt the best trips to be had are the last minute ones. Think, easy turn or a 2-day with 1-leg out late and back early the next morning. For a while there was an entire little micro-climate community (largely the super senior ATL88 silos as the primary example) who would bid nice weekday trips they had no problem dropping or getting someone to pick up from them. They would then drop their entire month and only do the easy 2 leg 2 day trips you mentioned as they popped up. Late report, early release, 2-4 hours block for 10.5 pay. Add on even the occasional GS to that and they could find themselves in the exact scenario you referenced. Sometimes a WS is really a GS in a roundabout way.
