Yes. My buddy settled in SDF after the Navy (both from midwest), used to bid reserve. His usual interaction with the company was about once a month he'd call them up and ask for a trip so he didn't forget how to fly.
He was on the DC-8. When they retired it, they had some new planes coming the following year. The company didn't want to do a bump-n-flush for -8 guys, and then repeat that (with all the training costs) a year later when the new planes arrived so they just paid those guys to sit home for a year.
So its most pilots choice to do the 2-3 weeks on, then a week off? I don't think I could handle the 2 weeks of being gone.
